Hotchkis, John

HOTCHKIS.

JOHN HOTCHKIS was born 28 Aug. 1766. One of his brothers, Adam, was killed in India, in the Medical Service of the Company, in 1780; another, Alexander, a Lieutenant of Marines, perished in the same year on board the STIRLING CASTLE 64, on the coast of America; and a third, David, lost his left leg while serving as a Lieutenant of the PRESTON 50, in the action off the Dogger Bank in 1781.

This officer entered the Navy, in Oct. 1778, as Captain’s Servant, on board the CRESCENT 28, Capt. Chas. Hope, with whom he continued to serve as Midshipman of the IPHIGENIA 32, and LEOCADIA 38, on the Home and Newfoundland stations, until the peace of 1783. Re-embarking, in 1793, as Master’s Mate, on board the GIBRALTAR 80, Capts. Thos. Mackenzie and John Pakenham, he had an opportunity, under the former officer, of witnessing Lord Howe’s action of 1 June, 1794, on which occasion he was sent into port as Acting-Master of the NORTHUMBERLAND 74, one of the prizes taken by the British. On proceeding to the Mediterranean Mr. Hotchkis was there promoted, 17 June, 1795, to a Lieutenancy in the ÇA IRA 80, Capt. Chas. Dudley Pater. He remained in that ship until burnt out, in consequence of her having accidentally caught fire, in San Fiorenza Bay, 11 April, 1796; after which we find him employed, from 26 Sept. in the same year until May, 1797, on board the MONMOUTH 64, Capt. the Earl of Northesk, in the North Sea. He then invalided, from badness of sight, and did not again go afloat. He became a Retired Commander on the Junior List 26 Nov. 1830, and on the Senior 21 Dec. 1833.

Commander Hotchkis married, first, 9 Nov. 1800, Mary, daughter of Rich. Pearce, Esq., co. Westmeath. That lady dying in 1830, he espoused, secondly, in 1832, a daughter of Thos. Hart, Esq., a Major in the Hon.E.I.Co.’s service, by whom he has issue one son.

[%% Why did John sr retire to the parish of Llangattock? Perhaps because a fellow Naval officer, an admiral, lived there, but had no children and sold his house?]

given to bro George my estate at Whandn? And he has sold it and can arrange an annuity himself to live comfortably.. He is a bachelor above the age of 80 and now has means so his 100 pounds annuity is revoked, replaced by 50 pounds paid in halves each 6 months. If his finances go below 100 pounds per year my trustees can top it up to 100 pounds, but otherwise no money goes to him- our financial affairs are settled.

Son John Jr is no 12. Wife's annuity increased by 100 pounds. Nephew James get 100 pounds annuity until John jr turns 21 or when James gets a salaried job or inherits a fortune.

To Miss Stella Stewart Kirby 19 guineas as a token of remembrance for her kind attention and if his son does nor reach maturity then an annuity of 25 pounds for life and to housekeeper Mary Inglis an annuity of 15 pounds if son dies young.

He purchased shares for John jr in the Western Bank of Scotland, standing in the names of nephew James Hotchkis, and of Walter Jollie and of Thomas Strong as trustees, 17 shares, use dividends to buy more. Transfer to will trustees.

As bro George is so much advanced in years I do not wish to impose on him the burden of being one of my trustees and executors and as Mr. William Smith one of the trustees and executors died last year I revoke each and every one of the trustees and executors named and substitute my wife Ann, the Reverand Hugh Bolt, M. A. Asst? Rector of Llanfitangel? Taf y Olyn? In the county of Brecon and Robert Smith of Kiramond?, Surrey solicitor to look after property in England and Wales and funds and shares in any bank or company in England, Wales or Scotland, except llanwysk Villa is my wife's. Can sell properties while John Jr is under 21, or if he dies under 21 to sell the properties within 2 years. Robert Smith can take his professional costs from my estate. If I die before my son turns 18 I recommend he be made a ward in Chancery. If there is disagreement between my executors then let them be decided by the opinion of my wife so that it be not inconsistent with the true intent and meaning of this my will
