Cross Hall' a Stanley Seat : [9]

On Cross Hall Lineage: The name Cross Hall may have been derived from a cross that was built by the Burscough canons. The early charter of Burscough Priory provides a detailed description of its boundaries. A later deed, known as the "charter of the rent of Cross Hall," dated 1229, grants an annual rent of 2s. payable by Roger and Reginald of the Cross and their successors on behalf of Richard de Lathom. The tenants, referred to as le Waleys, were likely Welshmen, perhaps related to the Aughton family. Richard le Waleys was reported by the prior of Burscough to have built a horse mill within the latter's "Land of the Cross." Still, he later acknowledged the prior's title and received the mill as a tenant at a rent of 12d. Another agreement was reached in 1280, allowing the prior certain rights of way over Richard le Waleys' land.

In 1309, Richard le Waleys of the Cross, the younger, complained that William de Codesbecke, Robert of the Cross the elder, and Adam his brother, had dispossessed him of his free tenement in Lathom. The estate had been mortgaged to Eustace de Codesbecke, deceased, whose debt had not been paid. The Cross family retained an interest in the place until the end of the fourteenth century. Still, the lords of Lathom, as tenants of the prior of Burscough, held superiority over them. Later, Cross Hall appears to have returned to the Stanleys, as they succeeded the Lathoms. In the accounts already mentioned, the rent of 3s. paid to the prior of Burscough can be observed. It was later acquired by the earls of Derby, along with other lands of the priory. A junior branch of the Stanley family had Cross Hall on lease from the earl, and Sir Thomas Stanley of Bickerstaffe was still holding it in 1653.

Sir Thomas Stanley's eldest son became the ancestor of the Earls of Derby. His second son, Peter, was the father of Thomas Stanley of Cross Hall, who served as high sheriff in 1718 and died in 1733. Charles, the tenth earl of Derby, bequeathed Cross Hall to Thomas's son. If his male issue failed, it would pass, based on the terms of the bequest, to the issue of Dr. Thomas Stanley, rector of Winwick. The current owner of Cross Hall is Mr. Edward James Stanley.

Cross Place, a messuage located in Westhead, appears to have been adjacent to Cross Hall. The Cross family held it until the end of the fourteenth century, and it later passed to the Woodwards of Shevington. Today it is owned by the trustees of the late Charles Scarisbrick. Westhead was occupied by small freeholders from early times. A grant made by Robert de Lathom in 1292-3 to Robert, his tailor, possibly refers to land in this area. Several individuals in Lathom had their lands confiscated and sold by Parliament in 1652 including T. Stanley of Cross Hall. An Enclosure Act for Lathom and Skelmersdale was passed in 1778. Mary passed away on the 21st of July 1586.She was buried at Great Harwood, July A.D. 1585.[2][4]
