Notes

Note 1

!Note: A 1343 Upton Magna deed lists “H Hokelittes” among the witnesses. No other H-root surnames in Shropshire during this period remain unidentified outside the Hotchkiss/Hawkins cluster, with the exception of a handful of well-known and very different names such as the William “Hubert” who is also listed as a witness. While the individual cannot be named with certainty, the form and context strongly suggest a member of the Hotchkiss family, likely a son of Roger Hochkys born about 1280 or a close agnatic kinsman. I am therefore theorizing that this is true and he is likely to be named for his grandfather Hugh, as a family given name starting with H. The land described lies at Upton Magna, a place later demonstrably associated with the Hotchkiss family in the 15th and 16th centuries, strengthening the case for continuity of family presence in this locality.
