Description:

Petitioners: Walter de London, canon of Salisbury.

Name: de London, Walter

Addressees: King Edward.

Occupation: canon of Salisbury

Nature of request: London states that whereas he, the abbot of Abingdon and Paston had papal provision to appoint Northwood as prebendary in Hereford Cathedral at the next vacancy there, which Northwood accepted, they then received the King's letters given at Stamford on 15 April in his sixth year [1332] stating that although Northwood accepted the prebend of Church Withington, vacant by the death of Mortimer, and London had pronounced a sentence of excommunication on some who disturbed him, nevertheless Thomas, bishop of Hereford, gave the prebend to Haule who will not grant Northwood possession of it, that London by his letters patent should certify the King if Northwood is kept from the prebend and by whom so that he can ordain remedy. In response to which London claims that Northwood was offered, and did accept, the prebend and was to be inducted into corporeal possession of the same by Strubby, on their mandate. But when they went to the manor of the prebendary they found it occupied by an armed force so that neither Northwood nor Strubby dared enter. There was an inquisition into this which found that Thomas, bishop of Hereford, and the dean and chapter of Hereford, or one of them, had fabricated the bishop's collation of the prebendary to Haule in contempt of the Court of Rome, and that the armed men at the manor of the prebendary were there at the bishop's order to occupy the same for Haule, including Haule, Brown, Brown, Rich, atte Strete, atte Strete, Dey..., Brown, le Parker, Aufrai, atte Strete, Adam, Stiri, Jones, David alias atte Hall, David, Houton, Thomas, Archer, Inkinus, Colston, Herdewyk, Herdewyk, Thomas, Brown, Young, Solers, Solers, Young, Maton, Brockhampton, Norman, Scheynton, atte Brugge, atte Brugge, atte Brugge, Frene, Henore, Newman, Newman, Potell, Clark and Sturmy's servant.
