Note: 1431 will is probably early, protective registration. Not death. Just legal housekeeping. Registering a will while alive is called probate in vita.

A few common reasons for a cleric to register a will early:

1. He was entering a new benefice. Taking a new appointment often required showing you had a will in place.

2. He held land in two jurisdictions. York often demanded a will be filed before a rector could receive rents or tithes.

3. Poor health scare. Clerics often filed “in case I die,” then lived another decade.

4. Travel. If he was appointed elsewhere we have him active in Wales, Hereford, Staffordshire earlier, clerks often protected their estates by pre-registering wills.
