Note: Basically the plaintiff says, “The parson is still holding my land and I want Chancery to make him cough it up.” In this era, it was extremely common for clergy — because they were literate, stable, and trustworthy to be used as neutral trustees. However, sometimes they disagreed with the potential heir. This is a civil land fight, and Richard is there because he’s was the kind of guy you put on a deed. Given Richard’s huge record of handling manors, rectories, and legal property transfers it would be far stranger if he didn’t get sued at least once.

Note: At this point Vicar Richard would be about 73. The gift appears to provide him with a residence or life-use property. Yatton itself was not part of Bristol city, but only about 11 miles away, and St Mary’s — the “Cathedral of the Moors,” built c.1400 — was one of the largest parish churches in Somerset with multiple clergy attached. It was the sort of well-resourced parish where an older priest could take lighter duties without leaving the area short-handed. He does not appear in later records, which makes this a plausible retirement posting.

!Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yatton

St Mary's Church, in central Yatton, built around 1400,[35] is often called the "Cathedral of the Moors" since it is so large compared to the village. The tower has three stages with diagonal weathered buttresses with crocketed pinnacles. There is a south-east hexagonal stair turret rising above the parapet with panelled sides to the top, and an open cusped parapet. There are stained glass windows with the coats of arms of local lords of the manor.[36] It has been designated by English Heritage as a Grade I listed building.[37] The Old Rectory was a Prebendary house, built in the 15th century and has also been designated as a Grade I listed building.[38]
