Nicholas Hawkins was born around 1516 to John Hawkins, clothier of Leatherhead and Midhurst [~1490–~1539], and his first wife, UNKNOWN [~1490 – bef. 1519]. Likely raised amid his father’s cloth trade network spanning London, Surrey, and Sussex, Nicholas came of age during the height of that family enterprise.

He appears to have inherited a significant share of his father’s southern holdings—including Midhurst in Sussex, as well as Leatherhead and Addington in Surrey—maintaining continuity in the southeastern portion of the Hawkins trade footprint. These properties would have anchored his position within the well-established London-to-coast trading corridor.

Nicholas had likely married Elizabeth by 1541. By 1551, they were living in or near Horsham, Sussex, where their son, John Anthony Hawkins, was baptized on 26 September 1551—evidence that Nicholas remained in the Sussex orbit and continued his role as custodian of the southern Hawkins interests.
