Note 1
Notes: Migration Note: From Rutland to Orleans County, NY — and Westward to Illinois
During the 1820s–1830s, the Hotchkiss family moved between Rutland, Vermont, and Orleans County, New York, following a route that closely mirrored the newly completed Erie Canal system [opened in 1825].
Total Distance: ~334 miles from Rutland to Orleans County.
From Rutland to Albany is about 90 miles, and over half that distance — roughly 50 miles — could be traveled by water. The Hudson River and associated waterways were navigable up to Fort Edward, offering practical transport by barge or flatboat before connecting overland to canal points.
From Albany westward, the Erie Canal would have provided a relatively fast and affordable passage into western New York.
The children’s reported birthplaces align with this back-and-forth movement:
Vermont entries: William [1820], Esther [1824], Chancey [1827], Harriet [1829], Caroline [1832]
New York entries: Deloss [1827], Michael [1831], George [1835]
It is likely the years and places listed may reflect baptism dates rather than exact birth dates — a common practice in early 19th-century records, especially where no birth registry existed. Chancey’s baptism may have been delayed until shortly before the move to New York, while Deloss was likely the first child born in the new location and recorded promptly, marking the family's transition.
Although migrants in this region were well known for using the lakes and rivers extensively, it appears that once the family moved significantly beyond the reach of the Erie Canal, they stopped returning to their earlier homes. Their father Henry Collins died in 1840. As the location is unreported, that may have marked the point when the family relocated to Illinois for good. The first confirmed Illinois record is Esther Hotchkiss’s marriage in 1846.
