Biography

Robert de Fouleshurst was the third son of Richard de Fouleshurst of Edlaston [Edleston, Cheshire].[1]

The Inquisition Post Mortem of his father Richard de Fulleshurst in 23 Edward III [1349-1350] indicated that his heir was his son Robert.[1] NB This Inquisition has not been located in the index to the Calendar of Inquisitions Post Mortem Volume 9.

Marriage and Children

He married Margaret Baskerville, daughter of Sir Walter Baskerville of Bredwardine, Herefordshire.[1][2][3]

Children:

Thomas de Fouleshurst [1][2][3][4][5]

Thomas, son of Robert de Fouleshurst, was the heir of John Baskerville, son of John, son of Sir Walter Baskerville.[1][2][3][6] John Baskerville died on 02 Jan 1382/1383 and his Inquisition Post Mortem[5] indicated he held lands at Weston upon Wyegh and Bradewardyn in Herefordshire, and Lauton, Pykethorn and Crisseg in Shropshire.

Death

Inquisition Post Mortem, 15 Richard II:[1]: Robert Fulleshurst of Edlaston held in demesne, as of fee, the manor of Edlaston cum pert, from the manor of Dorfold, in socage, by the render of 1d. per ann. ; val. ten marks : he held also a thirty-sixth part of the barony of Wich Malbank, and lands in Acton, Sonde, and Wylaston. Thos. son and heir.

NB The IPM has not been found in either volume 16 or 17 of the Calendar of Inquisitions Post Mortem.

IPM John Baskerville 1390

Writ to the escheator to enquire in what way Thomas son of Robert de Foules-hurste is next heir of the said John son of John; as it is found by an inquisition taken before Hugh Bisleye, late escheator, that he is his heir, but not in what way. 26 May, 13 Richard II.

HEREFORD. Inq. taken at Hereford, Saturday before the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 13 Richard II [June 1390]

The said Thomas son of Robert is son of Margaret sister of the said John son of Walter, and kinsman and heir of John son of John son of Walter.

Similar writ, 26 May, 13 Richard II

SALOP. Inq. taken at Shrewsbury, Thursday after St. Barnabas, 13 Richard II. Findings as above.

Close Roll 1390

28 Aug 1390: To Edward Acton escheator in Salop. Order to Thomas son of Robert de Fouleshurst, which Robert was son of Margaret, sister of John, son of Walter Baskerville knight father of John son of John Baskerville, being cousin and heir of the said John, son of John, seisin of the lands of John son of Walter, John son of John having died within age in ward of the king; as the said Thomas has proved his age before John Leche of Cestre escheator of Cheshire, and the king has taken his homage and fealty. Like writ to John Skidemore escheator in Herefordshire.[4]

The Close Roll of 1390 appears to be in error in describing Robert as the son of Margaret Baskerville.

Close Roll 1440

26 Nov 1440[2]: To the Escheator of Salop. To deliver three fourths of the manor of Cressege to Richard Duke of York. In the time of Edward II Elizabeth Lacy was seised of the manor and she married Walter Baskerville. They had two children John and Margaret. John Baskerville died without issue [John did have a son but he died a minor]. Margaret the sister of John entered the same and was married to Robert Fouleshurst. The manor descended to Thomas Fouleshurst her son and then to his son Thomas, son of Thomas Fouleshurst, son of Thomas [should be Thomas, son of Thomas, son of Robert]. Thomas, son of Thomas, married Isabel who was then living. After his death a fourth part was assigned to Isabel in dower and three fourths to John son and heir of Thomas, son of Thomas. After the death of John the three fourths descended to William Fouleshurst, brother of John. William died without issue and there is no heir of Elizabeth Lacy yet living.
