Biography

Juliana de Marcy was the wife of Walter de Baskerville . She is primarily known from records following the death of her husband. In 1259, John of Yanesoure was suing Juliana de Baskervill regarding land in Orcop, and her husband was certainly dead by this date.[1] In 1260, Theobald de Verdun had a lawsuit against Roger de Clifford and Juliana widow of Walter de Baskerville for marrying his ward Walter, son of Walter de Baskerville.[2] In 1265, following the seizure of the Baskerville lands in the 2nd Barons' War, "Suffamia de Baskervill" was holding dower in the Baskerville lands.[3] This has been taken to be a record for her mother-in-law Susanna de Baskerville, but given the dates it may be a misreading for this Juliana.

Juliana's identification as being Juliana de Marcy was made by Bruce Coplestone-Crow in his most recent treatment of the family.[4] This reference has not yet been checked to see the underlying source or reasoning for this identification.

She married Walter de Baskerville of Eardisley and Orcop. He died about 1259. They had three known children. Her son Walter succeeded to the Baskerville lands. Following his death, his brother Richard de Baskerville inherited.

Juliana was certainly alive in 1260 when she was sued for marrying off her son. She may have been alive in 1265 if the record of dower does pertain to her.

Birth

Born: Say 1220.

Rough estimate based on her son and heir Walter being born 1240-1245.

Marriage and Children

Married Walter de Baskerville say 1235 . He died about 1259.

Children of Walter de Baskerville and Juliana de Marcy:

Walter de Baskerville. Born between 1240 and 1245 as he was underage in 1260 and almost certainly of age by 1265. He was married to an unknown wife about 1259 while still underage; he married second Sibyl Devereux about 1280. He had no children and certainly no male children surviving. Walter died shortly before 3 September 1282.

Richard de Baskerville. Born say 1242. He was heir to his brother in 1282.

Robert de Baskerville. Born say 1245. Said to be a brother of Walter and Richard.

Death

Died: After 1265.

This assumes the 1265 record of dower refers to her and not her mother-in-law.
