!StyleName: d’Austrasia, Childebrand I Count in Burgundy, Duke in Provence, Seigneur de Perracy [~691 - ~751]

!Source: Childebrand I https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Childebrand_I

Childebrand I was a Frankish duke , son of Pepin of Heristal and Alpaida, and brother of Charles Martel.[1][2][3] He was born in Autun, where he later died. He married Emma of Austrasia and was given Burgundy by his father, becoming a duke.[4][5] He distinguished himself in the expulsion of the Saracens from Francia alongside his brother when he captured Marseille, one of the largest cities still in Umayyad hands.[3]

-

He was the patron of the continuator of the Chronicle of Fredegar, as was his son Nibelung I or Nivelon.[2][6]

-

Levellain believe that Childebrand was actually the half-brother of Charles Martel, related through his mother.[2][7] His date of death is also contentious, as some sources place his death at 743 while others claim he lived until 751.[4]

Childebrand I , was a son of Pepin of Herstal , mayor of the palaces of the Frankish kingdoms , and a brother of Charles Martel .

Biography

Historians are divided on the question of whether Alpaïde , the second wife of Pepin of Herstal, known as Pepin II , and mother of Charles Martel , was also the mother of Count Childebrand. The term used to describe the relationship between Charles Martel and Childebrand is germanus , which meant brother of the same father, and possibly of the same mother, half-brother or brother. The laudatory portrait of Alpaïde that Childebrand paints in the continuation of the chronicle argues in favor of Alpaïde's motherhood towards Childebrand. This is in any case the point of view of Eduard Hlawitschka. But Léon Levillain believes that if Childebrand was the son of Alpaïde, he would have named himself when he speaks of the posterity of Pepin and Alpaïde. Childebrand is described as avunculus of Pepin the Short , whereas if he was Charles's brother on both sides of the family , the correct term would have been patruus . Finally, the onomastics do not show any link between the descendants of the two brothers. But in fact, avunculus already had the broad meaning of uncle at that time. Without further details, the fact that Childebrand does not cite himself can be seen as modesty, and the fraternity is assured by texts, even if we do not find the same first names in the two branches 2 .

Described as vir illustris , he owned a villa in Marolles-sur-Seine . He married Emma of Austrasia and received Burgundy from his father, then he was made duke in Provence around 737. He received from Charles the government of Autunois , as well as large estates in Charolais and Brionnais taken from the dioceses of Autun and Bourges , which he bequeathed to his descendants 3 .

In 737 , he was alongside Charles Martel in the expeditions undertaken against the Saracens in Avignon and Narbonne 4 , 5 .

Duke of the Franks and Count of Burgundy , he is at the origin of the Nibelungid family attached to the service of the Carolingians . He is also known for being the second continuator of the medieval chronicle of Fredegar which he wrote from 736 to 751 , following the "Monk of Laon" 4 , 6. In 751, the chronicle was taken up by his son, which allows us to date his death to the period following 751 4 , 7 .

His wife can be:

either of royal Burgundian origin, a family that tradition links to the Nibelungen ;

either from the ducal family of Alemannia, among whom is a Nebi;

comes from the kings of Thuringia 4 .

From this marriage was born a son, Nibelung I or Nivelon I , author of the Nibelungid family 4 .
