He had two marriages/partners. His first wife was Emmeline Gregg, who he married in 1857 in Misc, Pennsylvania. Their five known children were Archie Dodds (1863-?), Emma Matilda Mizpah (1864-1885), Elma Gregg Sterrett (1866-1872), Samuel Alexander Sterrett (1869-1921) and David Gregg (1873-1924).

His second wife was Mary Ellen Dodds, who he married in 1857 in Misc, Pennsylvania. Their five known children were Mary Evangeline (1879-1940), John Renwick (1881-1947), Janet Theodora (1883-1971), Robert Livingstone (1885-?) and Carey Wycliffe (1888-1888).
