!Notes: Blanch Hopkyns was buried 13 Jan 1598 in Monmouth, St Mary, with James listed as her next of kin. While the record does not specify their relationship, James Hotchkiss is the only known James of the family alive at the time. As Blanch’s presumed son Humphry lived in Lydbury North and her other son Randulph in Childs Ercall, both some distance away, it appears likely that young James—then about 14—was living with her in Monmouth, possibly as her caregiver.
This arrangement would have been practical and deeply personal. With both parents likely busy with their own households, James may have been entrusted to his grandmother’s care—perhaps as her helper, perhaps as her companion in later life. His presence at her burial and the clerical listing as next of kin suggest a close relationship, one forged by shared daily life and emotional bond. This quiet footnote in the records tells the story of a grandson who stayed by his grandmother’s side, and who saw her through to the end. For families then—and now—such ties can shape a life.
