Charles was born about 1842 in Bottisham, England, the son of Samuel Craske Butler and Sarah Randall.

His wife was Mary Ann Pettit, who he married on abt 1864 or 1865. The place has not been found. Their eight known children were Lizzie (c1866-?), Walter Samuel (c1868-?), Mary (c1870-?), Charles (c1872-?), Jesse (c1874-?), Laurs (c1876-?), George (c1879-?) and Stephen (c1881-?).
