James was born about 1776, the son of Alexander Dick and Sarah Muir. The place is not known.
His wife was Janet Buchanan. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their six known children were William (c1811-1883), Agnes (c1813-1886), David Buchanan (c1816-1896), Jane Roe (c1819-1869), Benjamin Roe (c1821-1884) and Mary Stewart (c1823-1908).
