John was born about 1660 in St. Ninians, Stirlingshire, Scotland, the son of David Laird and Jean Craig.
His wife was Agnes Murdoch. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their three known children were Robert (1687-?), John (1694-?) and James (1698-?).
