William was born about 1845 in Madeley, Telford, Shropshire, England, the son of Richard Kirkum and Fanny Onions.
His wife was Susannah Humphries. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their six known children were William (c1870-?), Mary Jane (c1874-?), Emma (c1875-?), Albert (c1880-?), Joseph (c1883-?) and Alice (c1888-?).
