Margaret was born in 1925 in Illawarra, New South Wales, Australia, the daughter of James Hilton Hotchkiss and Galdys Wilson.

Her husband was Quentin Merrett. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their four known children were Quentin James (1959-1985), Kathleen (Private) (1960-?), David (Private) (1962-?) and Frank (Private) (1963-?).
