Edward was born about 1838 in Nova Scotia, Canada, the son of Lawrence Phinney and Sarah Bowlby.
His wife was Sophia Bohaker. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their five known children were Armanilla Sophia (1870-?), Sadie (1873-?), Charles DeWolf (1875-?), Annie Azubah (1877-?) and Edward Heber (1879-?).
