James was born about 1833 in Nova Scotia, Canada, the son of Zebulon Phinney and Abigail Lovett.
His wife was Frances Sproul. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their three known children were George (c1855-?), Avard (c1857-?) and Owen (c1859-?).
