Porter was born in 1826 in Delhi, New York, the son of Selden Finney but his mother is unknown.

He died in 1884 in San Luis Obispo, California.

His wife was Sarah Ann Kinch, who he married on 31 JAN 1846. The place has not been found. Their six known children were Selden Adelbert (1849-1926), Annie (1851-?), Frederick Steel (1860-1927), Edith May (1862-1912), William Kinch (1864-1866) and Maud (1876-?).
