Sylvanus was born on 5 DEC 1805 in Lee, Massachusetts, the son of Benjamin Phinney and Nabby Bassett.
His wife is not known. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their five known children were Abigail (1841-?), Julia (1843-?), Emma (1844-?), Mary (1847-?) and Thodore (1849-?).
