His second wife was Anietta May Woolery, who he married on 19 OCT 1983 in Overbrook, Osage County, Kansas. They had no known children.

Melvin was born and grew up in Severy, Kansas. There he also went to school and met and married his first wife, Mabel E. Samuels, the daughter of G. D. and Carrie Deshong Samuels of Eureka, Kansas. Mabel was born the 29 Mar 1935 into a family of seven children. They lived in Osage City from 1937 to 1941, before moving to Fall River, Kansas where they operated Bowlin Sundries until 1955. When they moved back to Osage City.

They purchased Romin Drugstore in Osage on March 20, 1955. Named it the M & M Drugstore, and operated it until 1971. Mabel Bowlin later worked at Dean's Restaurant in Osage City until she retired in 1971. She died in a Topeka hospital on the 9 Oct 1981.

After marrying Anietta, Melvin went to Los Vegas with her for their honeymoon. Both were present at baptism of Eric Hotchkiss in 1990.
