Anson was born on 14 JUL 1786 in Manchester, Vermont or Kent, Connecticut, the son of Joel Finney and Anne Sackett.

He had two marriages/partners. His first wife was Esther Sheldon, who he married on 30 APR 1808. The place has not been found. Their nine known children were James Madison (1810-1832), Russell Anson (1811-1874), Alonzo McDonough (1816-1910), Betsey Sheldon (1818-1836), Isaac Sheldon (1820-1902), Adaline Miranda (1822-1879), Cyrus Dow Sheldon (1823-1824), Philemon Hunt (1827-1829) and Arelas Loveland (1829-1876).

His second wife was Rebecca French, who he married on 10 OCT 1830. The place has not been found. They had no known children.
