Calvin was born about 1785 in Nova Scotia, Canada, the son of Zaccheus Phinney and Lois Starrett.

He had two marriages/partners. His first wife was Martha Bowlby. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. They had no known children.

His second wife was Mary Rumsey, who he married in ABT 1822. The place has not been found. Their five known children were William (1823-?), Ann (1827-?), Benjamin (1829-?), Amy (1831-?) and Maria (1834-?).
