Alexander was born about 1824 in Ireland, the son of Robert Torbert but his mother is unknown.
He died about 1874 in Allegany County, Maryland.
His wife was Mary Greenwood, who he married on 20 MAY 1846 in Ballylummd, County Antrim, Ireland. Their eight known children were Robert (1849-1870), William (1852-?), Alex (1855-1937), Isabella (1858-1926), Mary (1861-1942), Margaret (1863-1959), John (1865-1904) and Anne Jan (1867-1956).
