Biography

RHYDDERCH ap IESTYN. King of Dehueberth.

Rhydderch ap Iestyn was born in 985 and died in 1033.[1] He was descended from Owain ap Hywel Dda , Hywel Dda ap Cadell , Cadell ap Rhodri Mawr , Rhodri "Mawr" ap Merfyn [2][3]

He seized power in South Wales after the death of Llywelyn ap Seisyll in 1023, and was himself slain by the Irish in 1033 . He was the founder of a house which, though it failed to retain its hold upon the crown of Deheubarth, nevertheless played a prominent part in Welsh history during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. His descendants were associated with Ergyng and Gwent Uchaf and Gwynllŵg. His sons were Caradog, Rhys and Gruffudd . He appears in the Book of Llandaf as a witness to a grant of land at St.Maughan's near Monmouth. He is said to have been the son of Iestyn ab Owain ap Hywel Dda . Though late, these authorities are credible, unlike other versions which make him son of Iestyn ap Gwrgan, a chronological impossibility. Iestyn ab Owain is called Lord of Iestynton [4], i.e. Eastington [5]. In keeping with this, one family, the Cradocks, later Newtons, which claimed descent from him, is found in Dyfed. [6]

British History Online, in a footnote, says that Rhydderch is the son of Iestyn ap Owain ap Hywel Dda[10] : Rhydderch ap Iestyn ap Owain ap Hywel Dda) - not son of Iestyn ap Gwrgan:"Iestin ab Gwrgan Prince of Glam. who lived at the old Castle of Cardif, mard two wives. 1st Denis Daur to Blethyn ap Cynfyn Prince of Powys, &; for her he built the Castle of Denis powys for her Court, as it had been agreed on when they mard. By her he had Isue 1st Rhydderch whose [sic] descent came Prince of Caerlleon, at that time in Glam....."

- Footnote 80: "This betrays the common confusion between Iestyn ap Gwrgan and Iestyn ap Owain ap Hywel Dda. The Lords of Caerleon were descended from the latter, and not from Iestyn ap Gwrgan."[10]

Iestyn ap Gwrgan

Iestyn ab Owain , grandson of Hywel Dda ap Cadell

Note that source for birth/death dates appears to have conflated Iestyn, King of Gwent, and Iestyn ap Owain. The entry for Rhydderch calls him "King of Gwent, Morgannwg, and Deheubarth " but details show him as son of Iestyn ap Owain ap Hywel Dda.[1]

Born 985, Deheubarth, Monmouthshire, Wales[1]

1033, Slain by the Irish, he was 48 years old.[1]
