Biography

Thomas Edwards was born in 1555, the 2nd son of Hugh Edwards of Rushbury by Alice, daughter of Thomas Kyle of Dorset.[1][2][3]

He was also referred to as Thomas Edwards of the College, Shrewsbury.[4]

Marriage and Children

In the Edwards Pedigree in the Visitation of Shropshire 1623[5] he was recorded as Thomas Edwardes of Salop, Justice of the Peace. He had married Anne Baskerville, widow of Stephen Duckett. Their children were Humphrey, Thomas, Henry, Jonathan, Lucia and Alice .

In the Owen Pedigree in the Visitation of Shropshire 1623 he was recorded as the husband of Anne Baskerville, widow of Stephen Duckett.[6]

Thomas Edwards gent married 'Anna' Duckett gentlewoman on 26 Sep 1592 at Calne, Wiltshire.[7]

Career

He was educated at Shrewsbury, and joined Lincoln's Inn from Furnival’s Inn in 1587.[1]

He was MP for Calne, Wiltshire, in 1593 and 1597.[1]

He served as Sheriff of Shropshire from 1621-22.[1]

He was noted in the will of Thomas Owen , one of the Justices of the Common Pleas, the will made on 09 Dec 1598 and proved on 28 Feb 1598/1599[8], the Testator made a bequest to his 'brother' Thomas Edwardes and his wife.

Death and Monument

According to Wotton[2], Thomas Edwards died on 19 March 1634 [presumanbly 1634/1635], age 79, and was buried in St. Chad's, Shrewsbury, Shropshire.

His wife, his parents, and a son were recorded on a monument at St Chad Shrewsbury, Shropshire:[9]

"Here in assurance of a joyful resurrection lyeth the bodyes

of ANNE EDWARDES late wife of Thomas Edwardes of

Shrewsbury Esq. and daughter of Humfry Baskervyle

alderman and sometimes one of the sherifes of London, which

Thomas and Anne Edwardes had issue 4 sons and 2 daughters. She deceased the 12 of

Novr. 1607 in the feare of God and peace of conscience endinge a holy lyfe with a

happy death.

In this isle also lyeth the body of HUGH EDWARDES gent. And

ALICE his wife father and mother to the said Thomas Edwardes,

And JONATHAN one of the sons of the saide Thomas and Anne".
