Walter Vaughan Esq aka Vaughn
Son of Thomas ap Roger and Ellen Dafydd ap Cadwgan
Brother of Roger Vaughan and Elizabeth Whitney
Husband of Sibyl Vaughan — married [date unknown] [location unknown]
Father of James Vaughan, Oliver Vaughan, Anne Abrahall, Elizabeth Lewis, Sybil Scudamore and Walter Vaughan
Biography
-
Walter Vaughan was the eldest son and heir of Thomas Vaughan and Ellen Gethin, daughter of Dafydd ap Cadwgan ap Phylip Dorddu.[1][2][3][4][5][6][6]
-
Thomas and Ellen had two other sons, Richard Vaughan, who died shortly after his father, and Roger Vaughan, and there was also a daughter Elizabeth who married Robert Whitney[1][7]
Marriage or Marriages
-
He married 'Sybil', daughter of Sir James Baskerville[3][4][6][8] but she has also been referred to as 'Elizabeth', daughter of Sir James Baskerville.[2][5][9][10]
-
However, the Dictionary of Welsh Biography[1] placed her one generation earlier as 'Sybil, daughter of 'Sir John' Baskerville, and granddaughter of Sir Walter Devereux. Norr[11] also placed her as the daughter of Sir John Baskerville by a first wife Cecily Devereux, though in his Vaughan Pedigree he incorporated an extra generation i.e. Watkin Vaughan and Sibyl Baskerville, followed by Watkin Vaughan and Elizabeth Baskerville, followed by James Vaughan and Elizabeth Croft.
-
Bartrum suggested that Watkin Vaughan married Gwenh. ferch Ieuan Gwirfaeth; and Sibyl daughter of James Baskerville.
-
James Vaughan, the son and heir of Watkin Vaughan, was born c 1485. Assuming there were not two generations of Walter/Watkin Vaughans, and if Sibyl was the mother of James Vaughan and the mother of his later siblings, then presumably Sibyl was born c 1460-1470. This would suggest she was more likely the daughter of Sir James Baskerville rather than his father Sir John Baskerville who died in 1455.

Career
-
Walter Vaughan was appointed Constable, for his life, of the Castle of Huntington, by letters patent of Henry Stafford, Duke of Buckingham. The Duke's attainder in 1483 probably terminated his office, for his appointment was renewed during the minority of Edward Duke of Buckingham by the King's letters patent of 30 Nov, 1 Henry VII.[2]
-
On 28 Apr, 14 Henry VII [1499] "Walter Vaughan of Hergest" was noted in the Inquisition Post Mortem of Sir James Baskerville.[17]

Vaughan Monumental Inscription at Kington, Herefordshire
-
The Vaughan Tomb at Kington, Herefordshire[6] was ".. erected in the latter part of the fifteenth century, to commemorate Thomas Vaughan, Esq., and his wife Ellen Gethen, of Hergest Court .... On a large stone affixed to the south wall, immediately above, is an inscription mentioning Mr. Vaughan’s descendants, with their armorial bearings, for eleven generations, to a late period."
-

Research Notes
-
Bartrum
-
Bartrum's research is not without error, but for this period is not known to be as problematic as for earlier times.

Drymbenog 2
-
Thomas ap Roger Vaughan of Hergest, b c1400, d1469 & wife Elen Gethin ferch Cadwgon ap Dafydd [El.G. 30; Glodrydd 30] - shows Elen Gethin f. Cadwgon ap Dafydd m Thomas Vaughan, with a handwritten note to see p 45 [Elystan Glodrydd 45] - where Elen Gethin is shown as wife of Robert ap Dafydd Llwyd. A note added for Dafydd Llwyd says he died before 1469. "DWB" - Dictionary of Welsh Biography's entry for him, Dafydd Llwyd - has this also, and lists Robert as a son, but no additional information about Robert. They were the parents of
Watkin Vaughan, married Gwenh. ferch Ieuan [Gwirfaeth ] ] chart , but I did not see a "Gwenh. ferch Ieuan" on the chart, although the repository had only the one Gwirfaeth chart). Sibyl d. James Baskerville.

Children marked as Sibyl's:
-
Jane m Thomas Mynors
NN m James Bromwich [NN=not named]
Elsbeth m John ap Hew Lewis [Hwfa 8]
Sibyl m John ap William Scudamore...see [Mynors]
NN m John Abrahall of Ingston
James Vaughan m Elizabeth d. Edward Croft
-
One son is marked as by his first wife and several children are listed without notation as to which wife was the mother. Also, my transcription of Bartrum's information may be a letter off here or there, so you'll want to look at the chart yourself to check.
-
The Mynors chart lists the children of John Scudamore, including two marked as the children of his first wife, Sibyl f. Watkin Vn of Hergest [Drymb. 2]: Joan and Catherine.
-
The Whitney chart shows several Sibyls, including Sibyl ferch Sir James Baskerville who married Sir Robert Whitney. The chart for James Baskerville shows Sibyl m Watkin Vaughan as daughter of Sibyl ferch Sir Walter Devereux of Weobly and, a couple of generations later, the Sibyl m Sir Robert Whitney as daughter of Sir James Baskerville and his wife Elizabeth ferch John Breynton.
-
Elen Gethin - an aside. In combing through Bartrum's charts for more information, I noticed notes on several charts. The clearest was on the Elystan Glodrydd 30] chart for Dafydd Fychan as son of Dafydd ap Cadwgon ap Philip Dorddu and uncle to Elen):
-
Dafydd Fychan was slain by 13 John Hir and avenged by his niece Elen Gethin . See Ll. ap Br. 11 note 1. I have not been able to locate that chart. It would seem to be "Llywarch ap Bran" but I found only one [Llywarch ap Bran 11] chart, and it does not have additional information.
