Runaway Cars Crash
Into Engine on Hill

Two veteran Punxsutawney
railroader were killed
instantly early this morning
when a string of runaway
cars crashed into the tender
of their engine on the
Bakerstown hill,approximately
25 miles south west of Butler,
on the Pittsburgh Division of
the B. & O. Railroad.

The accident,the worst tragedy
in local railroading circles
in many years,occurred at
2:20 o'clock this morning. Full
details of the crash were not
made available to officials of the
Buffalo Division of the B. & O.
here late this morning,nor could
the nature of the injuries
suffered by the victims be ascertained.
It was reported none of the other
members of the crew in charge of
the two engine train was hurt.

It is understood the Punxsuatwney men
were trapped when the top of their engine
tele.....

...were preparing to hook onto the train
and then the front section of cars let go,
sped down the hill and crashed into
the tender of the second engine in
charge of Jones and Stigers.

Six of the cars in the runaway string
and the engine were derailed. The accident
blocked both tracks at this point and
wrecking crews were dispatched to the scene
to remove the cars and locomotive and
repair the tracks.

The Lead engine of the train was
operated bu Engineer Anchors of Pittsburgh.

The Punxsuatwney men reportedly were
dead when other members of the train
crew reached them.

The bodies were removed to a Pittsburgh morgue
and this afternoon were brought to this city
by ambulance.

The tragedy recalled the accident on the
New castle Division of the B. & O. early in
1940 in which three railroaders of this
section met death.
C.S. Kunkle,Fireman,of Indiana;
Frank Welty,Brakeman of Rockton;
and H.W. Bowser,Engineer of Cloe,
were killed in that crash.

This community was profoundly shocked
when news of the fatal accident reached here.
The victims were held in high esteem in
Punxsutawney,where they had resided for many years.

David S. Stigers,was born near Punxsutawney,
a son of William & Emma Smyers Stigers.
He had spent his entire life as a resident
of this community. The deceased was united
in marriage in March 1924, to Miss Ellen Graham.
He was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive
Engineers and had worked on the B. R. & P. and
the B. & O. Railroads since 1917.

Surviving are his wife and one son,Donald;
and four brothers and sisters:
Scott and Frank Stigers,
Mrs. O.O. Griffiths and Mrs. Frank Dunmire,
all of Punxsuatwney.
Funeral services will be held at the
Morrison Funeral Home. Rev. N.M. George,pastor of the Reformed Church will officiate and burial will be in the Green wood Cemetery [Circle Hill].
