He had two marriages/partners. His first wife was Sarah Clack, who he married in 1853/1854. The place has not been found. Their four known children were Charles H. (1854-?), Fidelia (1857-1940), James Samuel (1866-1934) and William Franklin (1872-c1949).
His second wife was Mary Ella Walker, who he married on 5 APR 1874. The place has not been found. Their only known child was Alice Louise (1875-1958).
