!Notes: (From James A Hotchkiss) Martha Washington was the seventh child of a family of twelve born to James and Harriet Washington, and the first born in Kansas. Named in honour of the wife of the first president of the United States, she spen t her early years at the family's fourty acre farm south-west of Burlingame. She attended school in Burlingame, graduating from eighth grade there in the spring of 1900. - Martha worked at various jobs until, as a young lady, she met Walter Burket t. Walter, although he was possesed of several other skills, was also associated with the coalmines. They were married on June 5, 1906, in Burlingame, and had four children. - Both Martha and Walter Burkett took part in the community activity o f Burlingame all of their lives. Martha was a member of the Pythian Sisters Lodge of Burlingame. They were good parents, proud and protective concerning their children's welfare. As neighbors, they were kind, and considerate, and enjoyed the es teem of all who knew them. Concerning relatives, they were cooperative, with an attitude of good will towards all, which earned them the good graces of all family members. Indeed they looked after the welfare of Martha's parents Harriet and Jame s Washington during their declining years, as much as they were capable. - Martha and Walter both lived to see their children well established, with several grand children and great-grand children. Walter died February 20, 1962 at 83. Martha liv ed for six more years, following Walter's death. She died January 22, 1968, at 81 years of age, at an Osage City nursing home. They were buried next to eachother in Burlingame Cemetery.
!Obituary: (Burlingame newspaper, 25 Jan 1968): --- Burkett Services at 2 p.m. Today --- - The funeral of Mrs. Martha Burkett, 81, will be held at the Carey chapel in Burlingame at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) and burial will be in the Burlingame cemet ery. She died Jan. 22 in an Osage City rest home. - Mrs. Burkett was born Nov. 5, 1886, at Burlingame and had spent most of her life in this community. She was a member of the Pythian Sisters lodge of Burlingame. - Survivors include two sons, Ed win of Burlingame and Richard of Topeka; two daughters, Mrs. Leora Kirby of Cooksville, Tenn., and MRs. Arlene Ramskill of Attica, O.; two sisters, Mrs. Nellie Griffin of Burlingame and Mrs. Arti Gimm of Pleasant Valley, Ia.; a brother, Arthur Wa shington of Los Angeles, Calif.; several grandchildren and several great grandchildren. ---
