!Notes: In July 1898 at the beginning of the Spanish American War, William Washigton joined the army. He remained in the army for two years.
!P: They lived in a small house just north of the Ottley Ming's farm in Burlingame.
!P: William's wife Edna died of pneumonia at their home one mile south and one mile west of Burlingame Kansas on the road going north and adjacent to the Sante Fe Railroad tracks that used to run to Alma, Kansas. Thus, William was left with eigh t children, ages two weeks to thirteen years, to care for by himself.
!P: After Edna Truesdale Washington's death, William tried in vain, with the help of a housekeeper, to hold his family together. However, one year later William and six of his children traveled by autombile to Topeka, Shawnee County, Kansas to re quest assistance from the Kansas Children's Society, of which D. F. Kirk was superintedent. The three oldest children were sent to the homes of relatives. The two youngest were adopted by neighbors. The other three, two girls and one boy, were a dopted elsewhere with the help of the Kansas Children's Society.
!P: He lived in Pittsburgh, Kansas in 1956.

!P: Services were held Tuesday for William Washington, 86, who died Friday in the veterans hospital at Leavenworth Oct. 6 following a long illness. Burial was in the Burlingame cemetery.
!P: Mr. Washington had lived in a oldiers' home for the past 15 or 20 years. His wife, Clara (Edna Truesdale), passed away in 1917 and the children were separated a short time afterward. He was born at Cheshire, England, Aug 15, 1875, and came t o the United States as a boy. He was a coal miner and veteran of the Spanish American war.
!P: Survivors include: seven daughters, Mrs. Lillian Blair of Topeka, Mrs. Ruby Meggison of St. Louis Mo., Mrs. Harriett Soule of Selah, Wash., Mrs. Emily Kelly of Wakalusa, Mrs. Virginia Hennihan of Springfield, Mass, and Helen and Thelma Washing ton; whose addresses are not known; also a son Harry, whose address is unknown; one brother, Arthur, of Los Angeles, Calif.; six sisters, Mrs. Emma Beeson and Mrs. Mary Meggison of Topeka, Mrs. Nellie Griffin and Mrs. Martha Burket, both of Burlin game, Mrs. Anna Hagge of Chicago, and Mrs Artie Ginns of Pleasant Valley, Ia.; also 23 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. -----
