He was a very early Mormon convert, joining the church on 31 December 1846. Emigrated on board the "Sailor Prince" from Liverpool along with 311 other Mormon emigrants. He emigrated with his wife, his 7 children, his son-in-law, daughter-in-law , and 4 grandchildren.
