His parents were Alexander Laing and Agnes Hodgecase (or Hotchkis). Their marriage (or the banns of which) was registered in two parishes on 3rd September 1829, in Bothkennar parish and 20th Spetember 1829 in Larbert parish (indicating one o f the couple was living in each of those parishes at the time) Their children were: John chirstened 5 July 1830; Cornelious Christened 17 February 1833; John (no2) christened 1 April 1838; Barbara chirstened 15 November1840; and David christened 1 3 February 1842 (all christened in bothkennar parish). A female childre ( most likely Agnes, Id say) Hodgecase, was christened 7th October 1804 in airth parish, Stirlingshire. Her parents were Cornelious Hodgecase and Agnes Conochy or Concoch or c onachy married on 26th December 1788 in Airth parish. Hotchkies on daughter's marriage records) Notes Agnes has several different spellings of her name: Hodgkiss, Hotchkis, Hodgkiss, Hodgecase and Hotchkies. This is the name given by John Lang he r son when he emigrated to Australia in 1860. She is the daughter of Cornelius Hotchkies and Agnes Conochie from Carronshore. (or Connochie) Cornelius was a coalminer. A female child (most likely Agnes) HODGECASE, was christend 7th October 1804 i n Airth parish Sti. Her parents were Cornelius Hodgecase and Agnes Conochy (or Concoch or Conachy) who married on 26th December 1788 in Airth parish. On the IGI there is a Cornelius Hotchkis marriage to a Hannah Ma rshall on 15th September 1838 at Bothkennar ? relevance Have a lot of research into the Hotchkis and McLuckie family sent by other researchers, ? as to relevance. Notes for JOHN LAING: John Laing was also known as James Lai ng and John Lang. John was the son of Alexander Laing (a miner) and Agnes Hodgkiss or Hotkiss (Hotchkis from IGI), from Carronshore in Stirlingshire Scotland. He was born 1st April 1838 in Bothkennar Parish Stirlingshire, . Also on some certificat es he stated he came from Falkirk or Kilsyth. But, he stated on the ships manifest and sponsership he came from Carronshire (confirmed by the 1851 cenus) 1841 census Bothkennar: 1:13:58 1851 " " 2:19:78 Birth OPR Bothkennar: 1041972 FR200 John Lai ng was sponsered to Australia on the 4th November 1859 at the same time as his friend (cousin by marriage) James McLuckie. They were sponsered by Alexander McLuckie brother of James. They were both given references by Mr. William Johnson who was t he manager of the Carron Works. So, presumably they were both employed by him whilst in Carronshore. The fare was Four Pounds. (Reel No. 2139). NSW Archives. See copy of passenger list in file They were neighbours and friends and related by marria ge with a mutual aunt, Barbara Laing who married Alexander McLuckie . They arrived on the ship "TUDOR' to Sydney on 17th August 1860. See Laing file for copy of lists: On the ships passenger list, John Lang was known as James Laing. They both stat ed that they were natives of Carronshore. Presumably the christian names were confused between James (McLuckie) and John when arriving on board.. John parents were still alive and living in Carronshore. His religion was Presbyterian and he could r ead and write as he stated on the ships passenger list. In 20th July 1869 in Newcastle NSW he married Mary Lyons and one of the witness's was Robert McLuckie. See copy of certificate in file. His name on the certificate is John LANG, and he used t hat name thereafter, except for the birth of his 1st child Agnes who was registered as Laing.. See copy in file. He lived in Wentworth Street, Plattsburgh (Wallsend) NSW. This is a coalmining area of the NSW Hunter area. On his Death Certificate N o. 1910/3642 on the 17th March 1910 at Waratah NSW, his occupation was Coal Miner (he was 73) He is buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery at Wallsend. Next door was the family of Laing also: David aged 68, George aged 39, Mary aged 37, and David aged 16. This could well be the father and siblings of Alexand er Laing. James McLuckie sailed from Scotland with his good friend John Lang, he left behind his parents Catherine Graham and Thomas McLuckie and three older sisters - Helen, Margaret and Jean. They joine d James' brothers Alexander and Robert McLuckie who had arrived before them. James arrived in Sydney on the Tudor on 17th August 1860 nine months before his oldest brother Alexander married Ann Sharp, a Newcastle lass recently arrived from Clakman nonshire with her sister Margaret. Margaret later married Alexanders brother Robert. They all worked at coalmines in the Newcastle area. They had all been coalminers in Scotland and James and John Lang had worked in the Carron Works near Falkirk S ct. Alexander lived in Merewether and raised three daughters, Ann, Catherine and Isabella and lived untill aged 80. Robert settled in Hamilton with his wife Margaret and their childen Catherine, Ellen, Thomas, Margaret and Isabella before dying a t the age of 42 years after being run over by an Albert car. James never married and died in 1878 aged 39 years from cholera. She made Bird Isla nd on the 25th and was off these Heads on the night of the 30th. Light winds have prevailed throughout the passage. The only casualty has been one death ( a female). Checked the sponsership and parentage and native place and are not the same as Mary. So probably no relation. Mary died at Wentworth Street, Plattsburgh, district of Wallsend on 20th January 1904 of Hepati c Cirrhosis. Dr. H. Bean attended. She is buried at the R/C Cemetery at Wallsend on 22nd January 1904. R/C. Priest Joseph Kelly. Reg No. 1904/3492. The informant was her son John Lang of Plattsburgh.
