!Obituary: (Burlingame Newspaper) -- Mrs. Margaret Hotchkiss --
Mrs. Margaret Hotchkiss, wife of the late Edward Hotchkiss, died in this city on Monday night, following an illness of less than a week. The direct cause of her death was probably prostration as a result of the fire which destroyed her little hom e near the Sante Fe tracks, a couple weeks ago. In the fire which destroyed the little home with its entire contents, including some savings and cherished possessions brought from her native land, the old lady barely escaped bodily injury. And t hough seeming at first suffering no ill effects the shock of her loss doubtless had much to do with her death.
-
Mrs. Hotchkiss was born in Stirlingshire, Scotland, seventy-five years ago, on March 4, 1887. Her marriage to Edward Hotchkiss occured in 1855. Ten children were born to them, eight of whom are living. They came to Burlingame from Scotland i n 1884. Some years prior to his death Mr. Hotchkiss suffered a stroke of paralysis, rendering him partially helpless. Mrs. Hotchkiss has handled a line of teas and spices for several years and has been a familiar and welcome visitor in many of t he homes of our city and her perseverance in lines of business the subject of much comment.
-
Funeral services were held at the little home lately fitted up, Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock Rev. C. E. Schaible officiating. The services were largely attended by friends and neighbors and included over fifty children, grandchildren, and gre at-grandchildren of the deceased. --
