!Notes: Nellie Washington was the eighth child in a family of twelve children born to James and Harriet Washington in 1889, at their home, one mile south and on mile west from the center intersection of downtown Burlingame Main Street. Nellie Was hington attended school in Burlingame, Osage County, Kansas from September 1905 until she graduated from the eighth grade in 1902. Then she started working in various homes located in Burlingame, performing different types of housework, which wa s common in those days, until she met Edward F. Hotchkiss in 1904.
!P: They were married December 6, 1905 at Burlingame, Osage County, Kansas. To this union were born nine children. The story of this marriage is told under Edward Hotchkiss. At the time of Edward's death in 1947, Nellie was fifty-eight years old .
!P: At sixty-one, she was married to Roy Griffin, on September 1951. He died seven years later, on December 7, 1958.
!P: During February 1962, at the age of seventy-three, Nellie was married again, to Granville Griffin.
!P: By 1965 Nellie was suffering from hardening of the arteries and suffered from a light stroke, which effected her memory. During the following years, Nellie had several other strokes, which damaged both her physical and mental health, until sh e was paralized so that she could no longer take care of herself and required care twenty-four hours a day. It was fast becoming apparent that she would have to be placed under the care of a nursing home. She was first placed in the Osage City Nu rsing Home, and then in the Lyndon Nursing Home, then the Cotton Wood Falls Nursing Home, and finally the Burlingame Nursing Home. Esther Denny, her youngest daughter was an employee at this nursing home, and was with her a great deal of the time .
!P: Nellie's condition grew steadily worse until she could not move and had to be hand fed. She could no longer talk and either could not see, or just failed to recognise anyone. However, there were times when she heard the family talking, tha t tears would come to her eyes.
!P: Nellie died in her sleep at the Burlingame Nursing Home at the age of 88 years old, November 23, 1977. Funeral rites were held at the Burlingame Federated Church and she was laid to rest along side of Edward F. Hotchkiss in the Burlingame Cem etery.
