!P: Graveside services were Friday, May 8, at Greenlawn Cemetery for Viola G. Curley, 77, Bakersfield, California, who died May 4.
!P: Mrs. Curley, a native of Burlingame, began her teaching career in Kansas, retiring from Delano Elementary School District after 37 1/2 years as a teacher. She was a member of The National Retired Teachers Assosiationn of Retired Persons.
!P: Mrs. Viola Curley (Shurtz) was born in Burlingame in 1904 and lived there until 1945 when she and her two daughters, Iris and Rhonda moved to Richmond, California.
!P: She graduated from the Burlingame High School in 1922 and from that time until 1945 taught at several of the small districts one-room schools such as Fostoria.
!P: She began teaching in California with an emergency teaching credential (she had only 27 units at that time). Completing her education was very important to her; she was continuously taking classes to improve her teaching skills. She especial ly enjoyed teaching children with learning difficulties and was considered a master in that area.
!P: She retired at the age of 68 in 1972 and resided in Bakersfield, California from then until her death on May 4.
!P: Survivors include her two daughters, Rhonda Valdez of Bakersfield and Iris Brown of Sepulveda; three grandaughters, Gina Valdez, Carol Brown and Beverly Brown; and a great granddaughter, Adria Gonzales. --
