Ted Parre, 75, Osage City, takes his membership in the Lions Club very seriously. Perhaps this is why he holds the record for perfect attendance with his 150 pins.

To achieve a perfect attendance record, a Lions Club member mus attend two weekly meetings a month. For Parre, who has been a Lions member for 42 1/2 years, this figures out to be 1,020 meetings.

It is quite an accomplishment for a member of any organization to have a perfect attendance year after year after year. But what is even more astonishing is that Parre has kept his perfect attendance record even though he spends three months ever y year in Texas.

When he misses up to 12 local meetings while he winters in southern states, how then does Parre keep his perfect record? Simple...he goes to other Lions Club meetings in Texas, New Mexico, ArKansas, Oklahoma or Missouri.

"We can make up our attendance at any Lions Club," explained Parre.

Even though, by his hometown residence, Parre is an outsider, he helps whenever necessary and is certainly accepted by his colleagues. His frequent attendance at the Mud Valley Lions Club in Weslaco, Tex. has resulted in Parre being named an hono rary member. He has also helped with chili and pancake feeds at Mercedes, Tex.

In his 12 years of attending other Lions Club meetings, Parre has noted one difference.
!P: "At the club in New Mexico, all of the members are Mexican-Americans, excepts me," he said jokingly.

In addition to the 150 perfect attendance pins that adorn his Lions club vest and several plaques in his home, Parre has also received the "master key" and "advancement key" for bringing in 37 new members to the Osage City club as well as severa l new members for Texas Lions clubs.

The Osage City Lions club was organized 50 years ago in 1939. Eight years later, Parre was asked by his brother, Jim, to join the Lions. Jim, who joined the club in 1943, is the oldest member, followed next by Ted.

Over the last 42 years, Ted Parre has seen the club's involvement with the community change. In the early years, the club was able to do little outside the organization due to limited funds. Dues in the early 1940s were $10. Today, dues are $28 , and $15 is charged as an iniation fee.

The 50-year-old organization now holds several fundraising events each year. An annual golf tournament and a food stand at the fair are the club's main money-makers.

Following its slogan "We Serve", the Osage City Lions last year gave over $8,300 to local organizations.

Other service projects included painting the Lieber Library, sponsoring two band students to perform with the Lions State Band, paying the tuition and costs for Lani Colglazier to attend "Lions Quest Seminar" -- a drug prevention program for junio r high school teachers -- furnishing the awards for the Osage County 4-H achievement night and providing ice cream to grade school students during fire prevention week.

In honor of its 50th anniversary, the Lions Club will hold a special banquet in October. The evening's program will include the issuing of commemorative lapel pins designed by Harriet Fillmore, Osage City, said President Joe Shafer.

The other officers are: 1st vice president, Steve McKemy; 2nd vice president, Tom Fancher; 3rd vice president, Jim Clark; secretary, John Ashcraft; treasurer, Gary Shalen; board of directors, Bob Harmon, Leland Olson, Walter Anderson, Larry Fund , Alva Feltner, Jim Thompson. --

Theodore E. "Ted" Parre
OSAGE CITY - Theodore E. “Ted” Parre, 91, Osage City, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, at Peterson Nursing Home in Osage City. He was born Sept. 25, 1913, in Osage City, the son of Louis and Mary Prost Parre. He graduated from Osage City High Schoo l in 1931. Mr. Parre was a coal miner from 1931 to 1936, and he was a partner in the Didier and Parre Mining Co. from 1936 to 1950. Ted and his brothers owned and operated Home Oil Co. and Parre Brothers Trucking until he retired in 1979. He marri ed Marguerite M. Curley on Jan. 18, 1936, in Topeka. She died on March 14, 2002. Survivors include three daughters, Sharon Decock and Janice L. Ogleby, both of Osage City, and Judith Ann Shrader, Harlingen, Texas; nine grandchildren; and 13 great- grandchildren. A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Osage City. Burial will be in Osage City Cemetery. Mr. Parre will lie in state from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Crable VanArsdale Funeral C hapel in Osag e City, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Osage City Senior Center or the United Methodist Church Elevator Fund.
