!Source: Martha Lee Alexander Meanwhile the story of Bess Hotchkiss, my grandmother, daughter of Euphemia Hotchkiss my great grandmother who came over from Scotland: Bess married Charles Wesley Spurlock and their only child was my mother Roxie . He was a private in WWI and a sheriff's deputy in Osage Co., KS. He was shot to death on the job in 1933, possibly trying to stop a bank heist. The family folklore was that he was shot by Bonnie and Clyde. Actually he was not, though my mo ther and grandmother told me there were times he used to be called out to chase them because they had crossed the Co. line. In those days there was not much relief for families. My grandmother Bess had to go to a nearby city to become a schoo l teacher and my mother Roxie, the only child, was placed in the home of an aunt or great aunt, Martha (Moonie) Spurlock I believe. My mother also told stories of visiting her uncles Neal, Alec, Big Ed, and another (Bill?) all living on Scot c h Row near Burlingame KS. One of them was a judge. Bess Hotchkiss later moved to Witchita and married Al Catino, they opened a beauty salon together and she died in the 1980s, he is also now deceased. My mother Roxie married Lee Alexander i n 1949 and they had three children: Natalie (1953), Martha, that's me (1957) and Jessica (1961). Hope this info helps and if anyone knows more I'd be glad to learn of it
